LOCAL WILDFLOWERS & CHICORY COFFEE

CHICORY DICKORY DOCK
We love reading Birding Tours Jersey’s stories about local wildlife. This week they posted beautiful photos of Common Chicory (Cichorium intybus), also known as Blue Daisy, Blue Dandelion, Blue Sailors, Blue Weed, Bunk and Coffee Weed, a delightful looking blue star-like flower. Look out for them when you are on your summer walks, the flowers open on a sunny morning and close around midday but in dull weather, they remain closed.
Common Chicory is a member of the Dandelion family with thick, fleshy roots which are often dried, roasted, ground and added to coffee blends to strengthen the flavour or sometimes used on their own as a coffee substitute.

CAFFEINE FREE & GUT FRIENDLY
We sell an organic plant-based instant coffee alternative made from 100% chicory root by The Chicory Company. Ground chicory root has a very similar taste and aroma to coffee but is completely caffeine-free. This means it won’t lead to any of the unpleasant side effects experienced by some such as jitters, insomnia or energy crashes. It is naturally high in a dietary fibre called inulin and a high fibre diet aids digestion and helps balance blood sugar levels. The inulin that occurs naturally in chicory root is prebiotic, helping the generation of healthy bacteria in your gut whilst at the same time preventing the growth of unhealthy bacteria.
