A carrot a day keeps PMT at bay!

Yes it can be as easy as eating a raw carrot, or two, a day to help alleviate premenstrual tension (PMT). PMT happens when there is an excess of hormones (which can be produced by a number of factors such as stress, diet and birth control pills) that make the liver blocked and unable to process the hormones quickly or efficiently which causes a hormonal imbalance.

When the liver is not functioning properly, the hormonal system is not either as it’s the livers job of regulating hormone levels. The liver also has to direct various hormones to function in other parts of the body but if this does not happen there is an excess of estrogen. If this is not metabolised by the liver it builds up over time causing a condition called estrogen dominance and this can cause the uterus to become a toxic environment and a source of painful periods and PMT – mood swings, night sweats, acne, migraines and bloating etc.

In the 1970s, Dr Ray Peat (a renowned nutritional counsellor) performed research on hormones and nutrition. He found that eating a raw carrot a day helped detox the body and also reduced levels of estrogen and symptoms (including migraines) within only 3 days. He also noticed that it lowered inflammation and helped thyroid function as the unique fibres from the carrot help the body naturally detox as they bind to unused hormones and toxins. They can also lower serotonin and histamine which tells the body it needs less cortisol (the stress hormone).

This really is a cheap, easy and tasty remedy. Ideally stick to organic carrots and don’t peel them, just give them a good clean. If the idea of chewing on a carrot or two a day doesn’t float your boat then hopefully this delicious and easy detox salad from Mama Natural will:
